I just read a recent post which reminded me of this. For those unaware of Adywan's work: This upstanding citizen by the name of Adywan was not happy with the Blu-Ray colouring of the SW Original Trilogy. He decided to embark on a journey which made the hobbit's quest seem like a walk through the park. He re-edited ALL of ANH. Scene by scene. Frame by frame. He made corrections, re-coloured the print and added subtle pieces for some extra flair. Fn Belgian Mauser Serial Numbers.
It took years. In 2012 he released it for free. This year he has told us we will get ESB and it seems from his blog that he has been very busy. I have watched ANH: Revisited several times and love it. In particular, The Battle of Yavin. It now feels like a real, epic battle.
It is so much richer. As X-Wing fans, I'm sure you'll appreciate what he has done. Information and download instructions can be found here: Just thought I'd share. I know it is not directly related to the game but certainly enhances the game experience for me.
I cannot overstate how much I absolutely fell in love with Adywan's version. To quote his website, he truly did turn it into what the Special Editions should have been. I'm not going to name all of the things he fixed and/or made better, but I will say that I don't think he did anything that bothered me in the slightest.
Everything he did made both the Special Edition and Blu-Ray versions look like cheap b-versions created by some kid in his basement. While I am a purist at heart, and the original versions of the original trilogy will always be my go-to versions, I will gladly take Adywan's version over the Special Edition or Blu-Ray any day. WIthout question. I think at this point the only reason I watch the Blu-Ray anymore is that it's the only version I have in 1080 until Adywan releases ESB, which I cannot wait for. I've been keeping tabs on his progress with ESB:R on facebook for what seems like years. People may disagree with what he does.
I don't see why or how you could possibly watch that horrifically nauseating joke of a scene with Jabba in ANH or the scene in ROTJ with the musical number and seriously tell me that anything Adywan did was even remotely close to being worse. Edited May 21, 2014 by Explosive Ewok.
I watched it recently and appreciated how much effort he'd put in to remove the distracting special edition CGI yet kept the stuff that enhanced the shots. I really appreciate having the scene with Biggs added into ANH, Jabba not at all, I like that there is a version like that now.
The only edit I don't agree with is leaving out that look of doubt on Tarkin's face just before the Death Star blows up, though it was kinda cool showing how close they cut it with the superlaser starting to fire when the whole thing goes boom. Oh and it's been so long since I'd seen the un messed up Greedo scene. So great to see the original in there again. Edited May 22, 2014 by Rob Jedi. I concur with the above.
Tarkin's look, the removal of 3-p0's concern when R2 gets hit by Vader are downers. But you can't argue that The Battle of Yavin is infinitely better. Worth a watch given it is primary source material for our little game, and no doubt part of the inspiration for most of us wanting to play in the first place. I am concerned about ESB a little, maybe he is going too far. Recasting Han in Carbonite, adding flaps to snowspeeders and completely remodelling Dagobah and the asteroids.
Time will tell. Anyway, the link was placed for those that were anaware of his work. If you like it, you like it. If you don't, you don't. Edited May 22, 2014 by Conandoodle. But you can't argue that The Battle of Yavin is infinitely better. I'll argue it.
Adywan's version sucks. It's just pointless CGI, and the added part where the TIE swarm comes in and imperial march breaks the flow of the music is just clumsy and unprofessional. It's a textbook example of someone who has learned how to use the fancy toys but hasn't learned the art of using them well. By giving in to his ego and making his own revisions instead of just fixing the color issues he's created a bad fanfilm instead of a legitimate restoration. It does make more sense to have a TIE swarm though considering how many the Death Star would be capable of launching.
And some of the new shots of the Death Star were nice. I did not like the revision of the music during Vader and Obi Wan's fight though. The removal of the slapstick in the background during the entrance to Mos Eisley was good and the fixing of the lightsabres was something i was glad to see. I didnt like some of the smaller touches like the glowing needle on the interrogation droid. Mostly i was happy to see the music cue lined up correctly again with the fanfare beginning the battle as the X Wings dive to the Death Star. The TIE swarm at Yavin with the lazily-drifting TIEs was awful.
I'm all for more ships, but the movement in that scene was all wrong; incredibly inconsistent with everything else we've seen. A lot of the other changes I thought were unneccessary or handled poorly. Obi-Wan ignites his saber before Vader? Mini-lightsaber on the torture droid?
I loved the extra ships in the battle, though, in general. It really helped with the scale. Also the addition of facial movements to the cantina aliens. I thought I wouldn't like that when I read about it, but I felt differently when I saw it in motion.
Getting the lightsaber colors fixed up was nice too.
